ABOUT ME

Hello ~ I'm Jonathan Wallace, a character TD and animator studying at the University of Texas at Dallas.

I enjoy building rigs for unique characters and bringing them to life through animation. Currently, my focus is on rigging and Motion Capture. In my free time, I perform in four orchestras, preside over my University's Unicycle Club, and recently got into 3D printing.

THE BUTCHER - Prop Rigs and Tech Anim

The Butcher is an animated short directed by Disney Character TD Jared Lascurain about a Butcher preparing lunch for his daughter.

JetPack Penguin - Rigs, Animation, Destructible Environment

(All Rigs, all Animations, destructible assets: crates, timed platforms, ice walls)

JetPack Penguin is a 3D platformer directed by Phoung Huynh about a... Penguin with a Jetpack.

KaiJR - All Rigs and Tech Anim

(All Rigs, animation fixes)

KaiJR is a competitive split-screen game directed by Dylan Burton where two players compete to grow their characters and beat the other player.

RIGGING

Building a Biped with Maya Muscle Systems

This project was a dive into Maya's muscle systems which are used to add a layer of secondary animation and realism by simulating muscle volume and gravity.

​

The muscles take the place of typical skin weighting and react to movement from the joints. With numerous channels and options, Maya muscle provides a satisfying level of secondary animation to any rig.

Rigging For Games

This short video shows the joint structures and multiple controls behind the hero rigs for Jetpack Penguin and KaiJR. The rigs were made and animated from within Maya, and then imported into Unity.

Rigging Props

This video shows off some of the various controls behind some of the prop rigs from the animated short, The Butcher. Also included are various examples of props being driven by expressions and constraints.

ANIMATION

Motion Capture - Vicon Blade - Motion Builder

This video shows various stages of the technical process behind Motion Capture. Once you have your data captured in studio, the data is cleaned in Vicon Blade. From there, the clean data is merged with a HUMAN IK Rig in Motion Builder - where final edits can be made. Finally, the scene is transferred to Maya where it can be placed into a scene.

Animating a Ball - The Basics

This video shows off a lot of my early work as I worked through the 12 principles of animation - all centered around animating and giving the illusion of life to a simple ball.

Animating a Biped

The next step was to apply the 12 principles of animation to a biped. Here are some short clips of animations I have worked on recently.
